Be Aware... Be Alert... Be Safe!
Recently in some areas of Florida, scam artist are posing as electric workers. A Hollywood, Florida resident was literally in the dark when a scam artist posing as a Florida Power & Light (FPL) employee robbed him of $200. Yet another customer of the utility said the lights went out at his home, shortly before a man posing as a utility worker knocked on the door. The man was wearing a yellow hardhat and reflective vest, typical of utility and construction workers. He stated to the customer that his crew was replacing power poles nearby and he needed to check the home's electrical sockets. Police said the scammer had flipped a breaker switch outside the house, and while he was inside stole $200 from a bedroom dresser.
We ask our customers to call the Police or let us know if they encounter any suspicious situation, such as the utility worker scam. We also want our customers to know that Ocala Electric Utility (OEU) employees are easily identifiable by the company logo displayed on their uniforms and on the vehicles they drive. They also carry a photo identification card that will gladly be displayed upon the customer's request. Most importantly, OEU employees do not come into the customer's home unless the customer had previously requested an energy audit, which requires a scheduled appointment.
