SIGNAL EQUIPMENT UPGRADE WORK CONTINUES
OCALA, Fla. (Sept. 30, 2009) – Beginning Sunday, Oct. 4, the City of Ocala will begin upgrading traffic signals at 29 intersections located primarily in the southwestern section of the city.
This will complete the initial stage of a multi-phased signal synchronization project that is designed to improve traffic flow throughout the city.
With other project phases soon to follow, the latest work includes the installation of new control cabinets at the 29 intersections. The vendor, Naztec, Inc., will work nights to complete the work by Oct. 15. Work hours generally will be 7 p.m.-6 a.m. Police officers will be at each intersection during the installation and appropriate traffic control will be in place. No road closures or detours are anticipated.
Future phases of the project will include retiming signals along the major corridors, connecting the traffic lights to a fiber optics system and installing fixed cameras to allow traffic controllers to monitor traffic and change the timing when situations dictate.
For instance, it will enable controllers to monitor the traffic flow in real time and to adjust signal timing in the event of a highway accident or a large special event that is concluding.
All 123 traffic lights in the city are being placed on the system. The overall project is scheduled for completion in June of 2010.
